Hot Pot in Salt Lake City: A First Visit to Mr. Shabu at The Gateway
by Alex Urban on Oct 19 2026
Salt & Seek / Hot Pot
For hot pot at The Gateway, choose your broth first and build the meal in small rounds. Mr. Shabu’s published prices and dining rules help you plan lunch, dinner or a family visit.
Lunch or dinner?
The Gateway menu lists adult all-you-can-eat lunch at $24.99 and dinner at $33.99.
Vegetarian menu pricing
The vegetarian option is listed at $21.99 for lunch and $28.99 for dinner. Confirm the broth and available ingredients before ordering.
Start with the Gateway location
159 S Rio Grande St, Salt Lake City, UT 84101
Mr. Shabu is a choose-your-broth, cook-at-the-table hot pot meal. This guide covers the Gateway restaurant and its published Gateway menu. It does not apply those prices to other branches or combine it with a Korean barbecue comparison.
The restaurant describes an all-you-can-eat format with individual broth choices, meat ordered through the server and a selection of vegetables, noodles and sauces. For a first visit, make those decisions in that order: broth, a modest first meat order, then the accompaniments you want to cook with it.

What to try from the menu
Rib Eye
The Gateway menu describes this as thinly sliced beef from the rib primal. It is a straightforward named beef selection to ask your server about when placing the first meat order. Request a small round first so you can judge how much your table will finish before ordering more.
Pork Single Rib Belly
This is another thinly sliced selection, described by the restaurant as pork belly with intercostal meat. It gives you a pork option to compare with the beef instead of starting with several beef cuts whose names may be unfamiliar.
Cream Cheese Wontons
The menu also names cream cheese wontons among its appetizers. Ask which appetizers are available and included in your selected service before adding them. An appetizer can be useful while the pot heats, but the published menu is not a guarantee that every item is on the station throughout the day.

Understand the price before you sit down
Adults
Lunch $24.99; dinner $33.99. The published dinner price is $9 higher.
Vegetarian option
Lunch $21.99; dinner $28.99. Confirm which broths and accompaniments fit your dietary needs.
Children
Ages 5–10: lunch $14.99, dinner $18.99. The menu lists ages 4 and under as free.
These figures come from the Gateway PDF menu dated March 2026, checked again October 19, 2026. Confirm which service and rate apply to your visit, particularly on weekends or holidays; the lunch and dinner labels alone do not settle those details.
The same menu lists a two-hour dining limit, an 18% gratuity for parties of five or more and a $5 charge per plate of leftovers. These conditions make small, repeat orders a more useful strategy than filling the table immediately.
A first-visit sequence
- Choose the broth. Tell the server about spice preferences and dietary restrictions before selecting it.
- Order a small first round of meat. Rib Eye and Pork Single Rib Belly are two named options on the Gateway menu.
- Add vegetables, noodles and sauces. Take what you expect to finish, then return for more as needed.
- Ask staff for cooking guidance. Follow their instructions for the ingredients and equipment at your table, keeping utensils for raw ingredients separate from eating utensils.
Walk-ins and last seating
Mr. Shabu’s website says walk-ins are welcome and that it does not take same-day reservations. It also states that the last seating is 30 minutes before closing. Check the Gateway hours and reservation information on the official site before traveling; this guide has not verified parking validation or a guaranteed wait time.
If you are deciding between this individual-pot meal and a broader barbecue-and-hot-pot outing in South Salt Lake, use the separate guides below. They cover different locations and should not be used to infer Gateway prices.
This guide is based on the restaurants’ published menus and location information, not a claimed firsthand visit. Restaurant photos may show other dishes or earlier seasonal offerings; the cover is an illustration.
